“Why have you created a sandwich shop and a bar” I am constantly asked. Well, I love great sandwiches and great beer. From a simple concept, Hebden Sarnies was born.
By taking ingredients, design inspiration and experiences from living around the world, a space has been created to sample food and drinks which are both simple and innovative.
To me a sandwich is not just 2 slices of bread, it is a meal. Yes, a meal. With quality ingredients of course. Without being too philosophical the principles of yin and yang, where all things exist as inseparable and contradictory opposites should appear in a great sandwich. Where hot goes against the cold, sweetness battles with sour and softness interacts with crunch.
I admit, I am a sandwich geek. The history of many sandwiches is fascinating.Â
For example, The Gambler, taken from what is widely regarded as the classic of all sandwiches, The Reuben, has many tales of its origin. Was it in the year of 1914 that late one evening a leading lady of Charlie Chaplin’s walked into Reuben’s Deli in New York and said, ‘Reuben, make me a sandwich, make it a combination. I’m so hungry I could eat a brick.” Or was it Reuben Kulakofsky who created it in Ohama in the 1920s to satisfy poker players in the back room of the Blackstone Hotel. We will never know the real truth, but what we do know, it is a great sandwich.
At Hebden Sarnies we pride ourselves in quality. The experience is everything. That being sampling one of our famous breakfast muffins, drinking amazing coffee or enjoying a bottle of vino al fesco when the sun is setting. Oh, and let’s not forget the amazing sarnies with a cold crisp beer. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
